Lindsay Davenport defeated defending champion Martina Hingis, 6–3, 7–5, to win the Women's Singles tennis title at the 1998 US Open. This was a rematch of the previous year's semifinal. Davenport did not drop a set throughout the entire tournament.
The tournament was notable for the final US Open appearance of five-time champion Steffi Graf in the main draw, who lost to Patty Schnyder in the fourth round. It was also the first US Open appearance of six-time champion Serena Williams (who would go on to win her first Grand Slam title at the US Open the following year). She was defeated by Irina Spîrlea in the third round. As of 2020, it remains the only time Williams has failed to reach at least the fourth round of the US Open.
